Home, community, friendships. Where we live, how we live, and who we share our lives with—they are all a matter of choice. Is there any reason to give up those choices as we get older? North Shore Village (NSV) doesn’t think so, and neither do our members. In fact it’s our members who define North Shore Village, a nonprofit organization of dynamic older adults in Evanston and Wilmette, Illinois, who choose to stay in their own homes, in their community, and among their friends as they grow older.

How do they do it? On one level, NSV is an access point for the services and referrals that members need to live at home comfortably and securely, for as long as safely possible. One call to the central office connects members to vetted services and volunteers ready to do anything from changing light bulbs to accompanying a member to a doctor’s appointment.

On another level, NSV is an expanding community of energetic and engaged older adults. Book clubs and game clubs, theater and dining outings, biking or walking groups, cultural, social and educational activities — members put them together and members do them together, as often and as much as they want. Again, it’s a matter of choice.
